Good Health, Good Morning…The Benefits of Drinking Warm Lemon Water

A few posts ago, I talked about the importance of breakfast and the role it plays in starting your day off on the right foot.  Today, I want to talk about another super easy step you can take in your daily routine that could have vast health benefits for you, helping your digestion, boosting your immune system, and improving your overall energy levels…before you even take your morning shower. I want to talk about warm lemon water.

Before you raise a skeptical eyebrow, read on. Lemons have a host of properties that can have incredible effects on your overall health, due to the ascorbic acid and vitamin C they contain. And when it boils down to it, the choices you make regularly in your daily routine are the key to lasting wellness, either building up or tearing down you resistance to disease.

Digestive Aid:  Lemon water will help flush toxins out of your body, encouraging your liver to produce bile, which will help with heartburn and relieve indigestion.  It is also recommended to cancer patients to stimulate bowel movements.

Diuretic:  It will increase the rate of urination, which will release toxins at a faster rate and encourage a healthy urinary tract.  The citric acid also maximizes enzyme function, which stimulates your liver.

Boosts Vitamin C:  This helps fight colds, along with antimicrobial saponin;  lemons are also high in potassium which boost brain and nerve function, and helps control blood pressure.

Ascorbic Acid:  This serves as an anti-inflammatory, and offers complementary support for asthma and other respiratory symptoms.  It promotes wound healing and is essential for healthy bones, cartilage and connective tissue.  It also enhances iron absorption, which helps your immune function and is also important for menstruating women.

Balances pH Levels:  Even though lemons are acidic, they are alkalizing inside our bodies.  They are easily metabolized, which allows their mineral content to help alkalize the blood.  This is important because disease only occurs when the body pH is acidic; maintaining a balance is essential for good health. Regular consumption will reduce the overall acidity in your body, including uric acid in the joints, which is a major cause of pain and inflammation.

Clears Skin: The vitamin C component helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes, and combat free radicals. It also kills some of the bacteria that is known to cause acne. Vitamin C will also help rejuvenate your skin from within.

Freshen Breath: In addition to freshening your breath, lemons contribute to oral hygiene by helping to relieve tooth pain and gingivitis; however, it is important to keep in mind that citric acid can erode tooth enamel. It isn’t recommended that you brush your teeth directly after drinking your lemon water, but rather before-hand or, if–like me–you don’t like to mix your toothpaste with citrus, rinse your mouth with purified water after drinking it.

Aids in Weight Loss: Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It has also been shown that maintaining an alkaline diet can help you lose weight faster, and because of their alkalizing effect in the blood, lemons are an important part of this.

Energizing: Besides the mood-enhancing properties of lemon scent, the smell can help clear your mind and reduce anxiety and depression.

Seem like a lot of bang for your buck? It is. And this is something you can do first thing in the morning, before you eat or workout or holler at your kids. Try to use purified water if you can, and it should be room temperature or lukewarm, not hot. I use about half an organic lemon per glass, not bottled lemon juice.
